A sound stage studio is a large-format studio used to record moving images and sound, and to produce films indoors. Architecturally, its acoustic treatment typically covers the entire wall and ceiling surface with precisely calculated acoustic panels, while floors are usually finished with 4 to 6 inches (100–150mm) of absorptive carpet material. The central design challenge on a sound stage is noise control: achieving a very low Noise Criteria (NC) rating so the room is as close to silent as possible. Soundproofing has to keep out noise from human activity, transportation, rain, and other external sources. Typical solutions include a raised floor construction to isolate the room from vehicle vibration transmitted through the ground, structurally isolated walls with vibration dampeners, and a hung ceiling structure that does not transmit vibration or sound from the building structure above.
Cooling units are another major noise source, since equipment is often placed inside the room or above the stage where noise is harder to control. One common solution is to locate cooling units in a separate room, with distanced diffuser units and a carefully engineered ducting insulation system — structurally isolated ducting, vibration-free suspension, and layered soundproofing materials around the ducts — to minimize vibration reaching the sound stage's structure. An ADR stage is typically small — sometimes not much larger than an ordinary bathroom — and low-frequency echo is a particular concern, so walls commonly use panels at least 2 inches (52mm) thick. Because ADR sessions sometimes include singing, the room is often designed to be not completely dead but to retain a small, deliberate amount of live acoustic character, with a typical volume around 2.4m × 3.7m × 2.7m, supplemented with additional sound-absorbing panels placed around the actor during a session. Flutter echo — a rapid, buzzy repeated reflection between two parallel surfaces — is a key concern in ADR design and is addressed by treating opposing parallel walls so reverberation is evenly distributed across the frequency range. Portable acoustic panels are also commonly used to adjust the room's acoustic character between sessions.
