The Indoor Multifunction Stadium (IMS) at Gelora Bung Karno was built as part of Indonesia's preparation to co-host the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 with Japan and the Philippines — four tiers of stands under a space-frame roof, a main basketball court plus two practice courts, on a 30,720 m² site. Beyond basketball, the venue's program also covers volleyball, badminton, boxing, MMA, tennis, athletics, concerts, seminars, and other non-sport events, each placing different demands on the same enclosed room. ALTA Integra was appointed acoustic design consultant from Basic Design through detailed design, working through a specific list of problems: noise breaking into the main court during rain, held to the standard required for both sports matches and music concerts; noise escaping the building during events; reverberation kept short enough that speech stays intelligible during matches, concerts, and fire-evacuation announcements; and acoustic quality in supporting spaces such as the press room, coaching rooms, and meeting rooms. The room's acoustic behaviour was modelled and auralised before construction, then checked against field measurements taken with a Class 1 acoustic measurement microphone: modelled reverberation time before treatment averaged roughly 8.6 seconds at low frequency, 6.1 seconds at mid, and 3.9 seconds at high — closely matched in the field — dropping to about 3.8, 3.3, and 2.1 seconds respectively once acoustic treatment was installed within the project's budget, again confirmed on site. The result met FIBA's required acoustic performance without exceeding the allocated budget, coordinated throughout with the architecture team and the design-and-build contractor so the acoustic treatment integrated cleanly into the finished stands and roof.
