Museum Nasional Indonesia in Jakarta, one of the country's oldest and most significant cultural institutions, underwent a restoration project in 2018 commissioned by Indonesia's Ministry of Culture (Kementerian Kebudayaan). The brief was to bring the museum's lighting and audiovisual systems up to modern conservation and visitor standards while respecting the building's heritage, its structure dates to 1862. ALTA Integra's scope covered lighting and audiovisual design, including the museum's auditorium, coordinated toward the project's Green Building strategic target. Lighting in a heritage collection building carries a conservation constraint a new-build project doesn't face: illumination levels, spectral content, and exposure duration all need to sit within limits that protect artifacts and historical fabric from light-induced damage, on top of the usual visitor-comfort and wayfinding role lighting plays in a public museum. The audiovisual scope served the museum's auditorium and its visitor and educational program, layered onto a building whose primary job is still to conserve and display its collection. Meeting current conservation and visitor-experience standards inside an 1862 structure meant the lighting and AV design had to work with the existing building rather than assume the freedom of a purpose-built gallery space.
