Renovating Kolese Kanisius's sport hall — funded by alumni donations and built with Atelier Cosmas Gozali, completed in 2017 — meant fixing a hot, glare-prone gym without losing the daylight the school wanted for a healthier, more alert student body. The brief covered acoustics, lighting, audiovisual, and passive design together, since the hall doubles as an assembly and performance space, not just a court for PE classes. The daylight work started from schematic light shelves and light baffles, checked against the Daylight Coefficient method (Tregenza et al., 1983), then verified with IES (2012) daylight performance metrics — Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA300,50%) and Annual Sunlight Exposure (ASE1000,250) — to confirm the space would stay bright enough for daily use without excess direct sun. To cut glare and heat gain from the window openings, the team specified Acrylite Heatstop panels, which cut heat load by roughly 70% while softening and diffusing the incoming light; interior and daylight re-modeling confirmed the panels removed the overly bright patches a clear window would have left. Built out, the hall carries light shelves below the Acrylite Heatstop windows and a stepped ceiling that acts as a light baffle, bouncing daylight down onto the court. The room's acoustics were put to the test after completion by the Canisius Wind Ensemble, whose recorded performance in the hall shows the space holds up for assembly and music as well as sport.
