Vihara Borobudur in Medan is one of Indonesia's largest temple complexes, and one of the few in the country to house Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions under a single roof, each running its own separate worship schedule across the week. Delivered in 2017, the project called for acoustic, audiovisual, and lighting design across a building whose primary character is defined by chanting, bells, and ritual sound rather than speech. ALTA Integra's acoustic engineering work was built around that same sound signature rather than against it — treating the temple's chanting and ritual acoustics as the baseline the room's reverberation and isolation had to support, so worship services across all three traditions retain their natural character rather than being flattened into a generic hall acoustic. Audiovisual and lighting design were coordinated into the same houses-of-worship scope, supporting ceremony visibility and audio reinforcement for services and the different rites each tradition observes, while the project's green building strategy shaped material and system choices across the complex. The result is a place of worship where the acoustic environment reads as part of the building's religious character rather than an added technical layer — a single complex accommodating three distinct Buddhist traditions' worship acoustics, audiovisual needs, and lighting without treating any one of them as the default and the others as exceptions.
