Sound stage acoustic design is a noise-control problem: the target is a very low Noise Criteria rating, as close to silent as construction allows. A scoring stage next door is the opposite — it is designed like a small concert hall, with reverberation as an asset to be tuned rather than a defect to be removed. A Foley room is deliberately dead. An ADR booth is small, dead-ish, and fighting flutter echo. Four rooms, frequently in the same post-production building, with four incompatible targets.

This article sets out what each room type — sound stage, scoring stage, Foley stage and ADR studio — is actually optimising for, drawn from real production studio references, so that "studio acoustics" is not treated as a single specification applied four times.

The sound stage and the scoring stage sit at opposite ends of the same scale — which is why a facility that treats them as one specification ends up with two rooms that each do half a job.

Sound Stage Acoustic Design: Engineering for Near-Silence

A sound stage is a large-format studio for recording moving image and sound indoors. Acoustically, treatment typically covers the full wall and ceiling area with calculated absorptive panels, and floors are finished with 100–150 mm (4–6 in) of absorptive carpet material. The governing challenge for a sound stage is noise control, and it is a structural problem before it is a finishes problem. Soundproofing has to exclude human activity, transport, rain and mechanical noise. The standard measures are a raised floor construction isolating the room from ground-transmitted vehicle vibration, structurally isolated walls with vibration dampeners, and a hung ceiling that does not carry vibration or sound from the structure above. Every access point uses a soundproof door.

Cooling is the recurring failure point, because equipment tends to be placed inside or above the room where its noise is hardest to control. The usual answer is to locate cooling plant in a separate room and run distanced diffuser units with an engineered ducting insulation system — structurally isolated ducting, vibration-free suspension, layered soundproofing around the ducts — so that mechanical vibration does not reach the stage structure. An adjacent control room supports mixing and recording for the sound stage, with microphone signals sent to a wireless receiver typically 23–30 m (75–100 ft) away.

Scoring Stage Acoustic Design: A Concert Hall Without an Audience

A scoring stage records orchestral music to picture: a conductor works with a full ensemble while a large screen displays the film being scored, musicians monitor through headphones to stay synchronised, and visual cues mark tempo and transitions. The room is large — close to concert hall scale.

Abbey Road's Studio One is the reference case. It is the world's largest purpose-built recording studio at 4,844 square feet (450 m²), comfortably hosting a 100-piece orchestra and a 100-piece choir, and it has been the home of London film scoring for over forty years. Its reverberation time is 2.3 seconds — and, notably, the room underwent a six-month refurbishment whose explicitly stated priority was not changing that figure. Walls were washed rather than redecorated, the original Art Deco panelling left untouched, the floor re-sanded and oiled but not varnished, and the substantive upgrades confined to the control room. When a room's acoustic is the asset, conservation is the design brief.

A scoring stage is built like a concert hall but without seating: flat floors, with irregularly shaped wall and ceiling surfaces to diffuse sound, and reverberation adjustable via curtains or panels. Sessions typically use 5–8 microphones for a surround mix, or 30–50 when capturing individual instrument groups. High ceilings make it hard for players to hear each other, so 12–18 foldback channels are usually routed from the mixing board back to musicians through headphones to hold timing and balance — reverberation as an asset to be tuned, the opposite brief from a sound stage.

One honest limitation: even purpose-built scoring rooms are smaller than a full orchestral concert hall, and the volume available does not always support the reverberation time on offer with a large ensemble in the room. Low-frequency decay in particular can interfere between instrument groups and reduce recording clarity, which is why many classical engineers still prefer concert halls, assembly halls or churches for orchestral work.

Foley Stage Acoustic Design: Deliberately Dead

A Foley stage is where sound effects are performed live to picture — named after Jack Foley, who pioneered the technique. Unlike a sound stage, it is not fighting for near-total silence; it is typically a dead room instead, with most wall and ceiling area covered in high-performance absorbent material, combined with hard surfaces containing small perforations at roughly 3–4 square metre intervals.

During a session the Foley artist watches the film on a wall-mounted screen and creates effects live with hands, feet, props and tools — footsteps, a hand slap, water for a shower scene, crockery against cutlery. The room needs clear space around pits built for microphones and props, plus prop storage, typically set into a wall behind an absorbent panel that doubles as a door, with an air gap behind it that helps absorb bass. A separate scratch-track area is part of a well-designed stage.

The atmosphere is kept marginally more live than a standard recording room so the raw effect projects clearly enough into the mix — one reason effects work is often done in a conventional recording studio instead, whose acoustic character can suit the job better.

ADR Studio Acoustic Design: Small, Controlled, Not Quite Dead

Automatic Dialogue Replacement is both a process and a room: dialogue re-recorded after filming, in sync with picture, where the original on-set audio has noise or technical problems that make it unusable. Like the sound stage where the original take was shot, isolation from outside noise still matters here — but the room itself is built on a completely different scale.

An ADR stage is small — sometimes not much larger than a bathroom — and low-frequency decay is the particular concern, so wall panels are commonly at least 50 mm (2 in) thick. Because sessions sometimes include singing, the room is usually designed to retain a small deliberate amount of live character rather than being fully dead, with a typical volume around 2.4 × 3.7 × 2.7 m and additional absorbing panels placed around the actor during a session.

Flutter echo — the rapid, buzzy repeat between two parallel hard surfaces — is the key design concern, addressed by treating opposing parallel walls so decay is distributed evenly across the frequency range. Portable panels let the room's character be adjusted between sessions.

Why One Studio Specification Cannot Cover All Four

Across all four room types the discipline is the same even though the targets are opposite: match noise control, reverberation and diffusion to the specific task the room performs, rather than applying a generic "studio acoustics" package. Many post-production facilities house all four — sound stage, scoring stage, Foley stage and ADR studio — in one building, and each still needs its own design.
