Signify Innovation Day 2026: Lighting for Sustainable Building Performance in Indonesia

Signify Innovation Day, Light the Future, brought Jakarta's lighting, architecture and building-performance community together on Thursday 3 September 2026. Signify Indonesia convened the event at the Sheraton Grand Jakarta, Gandaria City, in Ballroom 3 on the third floor, running from 12:30 to 17:00 WIB, under the message Enabling Sustainable Building Performance in Indonesia.

Signify invited Herwin, founder of ALTA Integra, to open the keynote sequence. His session set out where lighting decisions get counted in a green building certification and what a design team has to prove to claim them. Two more keynotes, a five-member panel, an open Q&A and a technology demonstration filled the rest of the afternoon.

What Signify Innovation Day Was

Signify Innovation Day ran as a single afternoon program. Registration and lunch opened the schedule, followed by opening remarks, three keynote presentations, a panel discussion, a technology demonstration and a close. One ballroom held every session, so the whole audience heard the same argument from start to finish.

That audience was architects, lighting designers, interior designers, MEP consultants and other industry professionals. The mix matters more than a headcount. A lighting decision on a real building passes through every one of those disciplines before it reaches a certification reviewer or a facilities manager.

Shishir Bansal, Head of Specification Sales at Signify Indonesia, opened the afternoon with introductory remarks before handing over to the first keynote.

Herwin: Lighting's Role in LEED Certification

Herwin's session, Enabling Sustainable Building Performance in Indonesia: Lighting Role in LEED Certification, was the first technical presentation of the day. Its slides carried a working title that says the same thing more bluntly: Light as a LEED Strategy, covering the challenges, the strategy and the lighting credits in LEED v5 and v4.1.

The core argument was that lighting should not be treated as a standalone technical item. It drives energy demand, visual quality, controllability and occupant comfort, and it has to work with the daylight a building already gets. A lighting strategy only pays off when it is coordinated with the architecture, the interior functions, the facade, the controls strategy, commissioning and the long-term maintenance plan. That is also how ALTA Integra's green building certification work is scoped.

The session then went into where lighting now sits in LEED v5. In v5, daylight sits in EQc2 Occupant Experience, and the simulation path scores on Spatial Daylight Autonomy: sDA of 40% earns one point, rising to four points at 75%. Where Annual Sunlight Exposure runs above 20%, the team has to explain its glare response. The full credit-by-credit comparison is in our companion piece, LEED Lighting Credits in v5 and v4.1.

Herwin's own summary of the day was short: "For me, the key takeaway from Signify Innovation Day was that lighting has an important role in shaping the next chapter of sustainable buildings in Indonesia."

Aditya W. Fitriawan: Sustainable Architecture and Public Space

Aditya W. Fitriawan, Director of Architecture at Alien DC, followed with Shaping the Future of Sustainable Architecture in Indonesia: Trends in Building and Public Space Design. He shared his perspective on sustainable architecture and on where building and public-space design in Indonesia is heading.

Benno Salinas: Lighting the City

Benno Salinas, Chairman of HTII, Indonesia's illuminating engineering society, closed the keynote sequence with Lighting the City: Designing Smarter, More Liveable and Engaging Urban Spaces. Where Herwin worked at the scale of a certified building, Salinas took lighting out to the street and into public space.

Taken together, the three keynotes made one case from three scales. Sustainable building performance does not come from a single discipline. In Herwin's words afterward, it "requires alignment between the owner's goals, design intent, engineering decisions, product specification, installation quality, and operational behavior."

The Panel Discussion on Future-Ready Buildings

The panel took up one question: achieving sustainability goals and business growth through future-ready buildings. Prasetyo Adi, Vice Chairman of Green Building Council Indonesia, moderated. Four panelists answered from four different vantage points on a building's business case.

Christina Ng, a Certified Facility Manager and LEED Green Associate, sat on the panel as Director of Facilities Management at PT Colliers International Indonesia, speaking for the operating side of a building's life. Satrio Prakoso, President of the Indonesian Society of Sustainability Professionals, and Stefanus Yonathan Astayasa, Chief Business Officer at PT MNC Tourism Indonesia Tbk, argued the professional-standards and hospitality-investment angles. Gregorius Wahyu Kurniawan, Head of Sales for Signify Indonesia's Intelligent Business Segment, closed the panel with the manufacturer's view of where lighting fits a growth case.

The Q&A: From Aspiration to Implementation

The interactive Q&A pushed the same point further. The conversation about sustainable buildings in Indonesia has to move from general aspiration into measurable, coordinated work that fits the local context. For a lighting brief, that turns into five practical questions:

  1. How does the lighting concept support what people actually do in the space?
  2. How does it work with the daylight that is available?
  3. How flexible is the control system?
  4. How will the system be commissioned, operated and maintained?
  5. Can the same design decisions serve both energy responsibility and human comfort?

Signify's Lighting Technology Demonstration

Signify Innovation Day closed its working sessions with a demonstration of Signify's lighting technologies, placed after the panel and before the formal close. The order mattered. Participants who had just heard the strategic case for a lighting decision could then see current hardware behind it. Product innovation is most useful when it is tied to a clear performance brief and a realistic picture of how a building is used over time.

ALTA Integra's Lighting Work Behind the Keynote

Herwin's keynote drew its examples from ALTA Integra's own lighting projects, three of them built with Signify products: facade lighting for Danantara Plaza Mandiri, and the lighting design for Gereja Katedral Jakarta and Gereja Katedral Makassar.

A tower facade and a cathedral interior set very different problems for the same product range. The facade runs as a programmable scene the control system calls up and retires. The cathedral interiors have to hold a service and the building's own architecture in the same light. Those three projects are the working record behind the argument Herwin made at Signify Innovation Day.

Key Takeaways from Signify Innovation Day

In a certified building, lighting is counted in daylight access, glare control, lighting quality and controls, and every one of those depends on decisions made outside the lighting package.

For ALTA Integra, Signify Innovation Day confirmed how we already work. The goal is lighting that is purposeful, measurable where it needs to be, maintainable over time, and built around how people actually use a building.
